Correspondence written during college, courtship and Civil War eras of Herbert's life; chiefly letters to his wife, Elizabeth S. Goggans ("Lizzie"), from various camps in Northern Virginia; topics discussed include military operations, camp life, convalescing in Staunton, Va., and his desire to return to his family. Civil War items include letter, 10 July 1863, re Battle of Gettysburg -"I myself walked from Gettysburg to Williamsport, because I thought my wound was too slight to ride when there were so many badly wounded [but] I found it was not prudent for me to walk further"; and 28 Nov. 1864, "Everybody is looking to Georgia & hoping for good news & fearing lest it should be bad"; and also included are genealogical charts for the Herbert and Goggans families.
